I once asked my mentor at work, "What's the secret to a happy marriage?" Her reply, "Traveling for work".
Laughs aside, there's definitely an element of truth to it. I love my husband, but I also have always had a job that I've traveled for work. If you grounded me or cut out me of being able to sit in a bathrobe while ordering room service and starfish sleeping across a King-size bed every once in a while, I'd lose it!
I don't travel every week, or anything close to that. I know we're lucky. I don't know what we'd do if one of us was gone every week. We're definitely in the absence makes the heart go fonder category. While I'm gone, he usually goes out and blows off some steam with coworkers or guy friends, eating some crappy food and drinking a few too many bourbons, but I'm glad he gets that time.
The people that are texting or calling their spouse all day while gone for business with 'I love you's". You're great, I'm not judging you, but that's not us. We're as good as we are because we both get our time away. I get to have a bubble bath or go sit at the bar of a nice restaurant or get to go shopping. And him, well, you go do you boo and I'll be back in 48 hours, and then we have date night.
The moral of the story: enjoy the time you're together and enjoy the time you're not. If you're fortunate to go somewhere for work, maybe you explore, maybe you don't, but in my opinion, it's better than sitting in an office somewhere. I'd rather get up and go!
Advice:
Enjoy the time you're away. Have your space, let your hubby have their space. You'll never get that if you're texting every minute. Have some interesting story to tell each other when you get back home.
It's a long day at work. You're exhausted and the last thing you want to do is see a college roommate, right? Well, when else are you going to do that? It's so easy to let those non-everyday friends fall by the wayside, but make the effort and laughing about old times for one night can really be a highlight.
If you can't go for the top tier of any hotel, then at least be loyal to a hotel/airline/car rental. Take advantage of your hours on the road to pay for fun stuff down the road. (I personally am a Delta/Bonvoy/Avis loyal person)
H2O- I for one, always get sent to dry climates, so water water water, and pack eyedrops and anything that will moisturize your sad, airplane-depleted pores.
Pack a few sheet masks and order from that ridiculous pillow menu at the hotel, because why not?
I'm not a germophobe, but honestly, I don't love my body touching the sheets at a hotel unless I know it's of a certain caliber, so pack some unsexy, but comfy long sleeved jammy jams to get on those zzzzz's.
Sit at the bar, have a cocktail, and have a conversation with a stranger, whether that be another business person or the bartender. Keeping your social skills sharp is a plus! And you can talk freely to people who don't know your everyday life!
